Indonesia-styled maddrassa recognized in international level

Islamic schools (madrassa) in Indonesia have for long time tried to meet their targeted goals. As a result the their existence as religious educational institutions have now been recognized in international level especially by the member countries of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Director General of Islamic Education of the Department of Religious Affairs Dr Mohammad Ali made the remark after his meeting with the Philipines' education delegates in Jakarta recently.

The delegates led by the Deputy Minister of Education of the Philipines Dr Manaros Boransing were also welcomed by the Sekretary General of the Department of Religious Affairs Bahrul Hayat Ph.D and the Director of Madrassa education Drs Firdaus B. M.Pd.

"There have been some countries expressing their willingness to study about Islamic education systems in Indonesia especially both madrassa and pesantren (Islamic boarding school) such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria," said Ali, who is also a professor at the University of Indonesian Education (UPI)

Related to their visit to Indonesia Ali said that in the Philipines there had been a number of madrassa.

"They have also had a number of madrassa," he said, adding that the madrassa in the Philipines were not as good as the madrassa in Indonesia relating to the ideal system, curriculum, teaching staff and outcome.

For that reason, Ali added, the Philipines would like to study and have support from the government of Indonesia especially in increasing quality of teachers. For those whose no bachelor degree have willingness to study in Indonesia. In addition there were also teachers and headmasters willing to earn postgraduate program degrees in Indonesia, he said.

"We promise to support them either the support that gives them easy access or the support of scholarship given to madrassa teachers in the Philipines willing to study in Indonesia," Ali said.

Ali also said that he would constantly increase quality of Islamic education throughout the country by constructing International Islamic schools for instance.

In 2008, he said, there would be 5 international madrassa; next year there would be 20 and in 2010 there would be international madrassa in each province.
